Today’s message summary of July 14, 2019 from Pastor Gus Brown:
The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to share what Jesus has purchased for us–our inheritance through Him.
Note that these are qualities of the Holy Spirit that we are to impart. This is our inheritance:
1. Holiness (Psalm 51:11; Romans 1:4)
2. Wisdom (Isaiah 11:2; 1 Corinthians 1:30)
3. Understanding (Isaiah 11:2; 1 Corinthians 2:12)
4. Counsel (Isaiah 11:2)
5. Supplication (Zechariah 12:10)
6. Worship (John 4:23)
7. Truth (John 14:17)
8. Comfort (John 14:26)
9. He is Life (Romans 8:2)
10. Adoption (Romans 8:15)
11. Faith (2 Corinthians 4:13)
12. Love (2 Timothy 1:7)
13. Might (2 Timothy 1:7)
14. Sound Judgment or Self-Discipline (2 Timothy 1:7)
15. Revelation – To Know God Better (Ephesians 1:17)
16. Power (Ephesians 3:20; Romans 15:13)
17. To Cleanse our Consciences (Hebrews 9:14)
18. The Spirit of Grace (Hebrews 10:29)
19. The Spirit of Glory (1 Peter 4:14)
When you are saved, God begins to erase your past. He gives you the grace to move on from where you came from and gives you the experience of victory after victory.
Ephesians 1:13-14
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
The Holy Spirit is a deposit that guarantees our inheritance.
God knew that we could not live the Christian life without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
The best life that you can ever life is one that is in the will of God.
Can you lose your inheritance?
Ephesians 5:5-10
For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
Sexual immorality, greed, impure thoughts and idolatry are far from focusing on Jesus.
You cannot lose your salvation, but you can lose your inheritance if you choose a life of disobedience over obedience. That is to lose the completeness of what you are entitled to.
When you focus on God’s Word, you understand that, as a child of God, you allow the Holy Spirit to teach you about living in a Christlike existence and that you have an inheritance.
Hebrews 5:1-4
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is best with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
A religious person, by itself, is not enough. Believing in Jesus Christ must include the gospel of truth that comes from God’s Word.
Hebrews 9:15-17
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
What are the benefits in the New Covenant?
This is your inheritance.
John 3:27
John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.”
1 Corinthians 3:21-23
So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world of life or death or the present or the future–all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
Are you living free in Christ (John 8:36)?
God has freely given this inheritance to us.
1 Corinthians 2:12
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
As Adam’s offspring, we follow him in death. He was born in a world without sin. Because he was expelled from the garden, we inherited his sinful nature. Because Christ rose from the dead and gave us eternal life–our inheritance comes from Him.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Jesus wants you to enjoy his inheritance and live the abundant life.
1 Peter 1:17-19
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
He gives us all things.
Romans 8:31-32
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
The Holy Spirit freely provides wisdom and understanding. He gives you what you need to be able to see His wonderful works throughout your life and in the lives of others.
It is the Spirit of God who imparts all that Jesus has for us.
