A message summary of Sunday, September 16, 2018 from Esther Schaeffer:
Every follower of Christ needs to be involved in world evangelism. We are committed to bringing the gospel to the last pockets of people in the world. We have one goal and one purpose…to bring as many people as possible to the Lord…the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
In Joshua Chapter 5, we read about how Joshua is commissioned to be the leader of the Israelites, and his first challenge is to go into battle at Jericho.
When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua approached him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
What Joshua had to understand was whose battle it was that he was a part of. This was the Lord’s battle. Whatever you are going through, the way that you travel are of the Lord, and He needs to be at the forefront of whatever that you do.
The total surrender of Joshua to the Lord was evidenced when he bowed down before the man who was there as the commander of the Lord’s army (5:14).
My goal and purpose as a missionary is to follow Jesus and to go where he has sent me to go. Is the Lord Jesus out in front of your life? Who are you following?
When I arrived in Burkina in 2000, there were about 500,000 people. There are now over 1.5 million people there. It has really grown tremendously. It is a highly strategic location in West Africa for ministry and teaching residents there about the Bible in order that they can teach and train others.
We train pastors and teachers, including pastors’ wives to be able to lead in the future. Some of it involves learning to read and write. In the communities, the women are viewed as very influential. Much of what I am involved in is teaching and bible study.
I don’t want to miss any opportunity to follow the Lord, which is exactly what Joshua experienced.
The commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did that.
In order to follow Jesus, we need to pursue holiness. We need to put aside anything that becomes more important than following the Lord.
The Holy Spirit must do a work in us. While others may do what they desire, that is not what we, as believers, should do. We should only desire to seek holiness.
God needs us to take off our shoes and revere the places that we go as holy ground. He wants us to see Him as holy in order that we be as holy.
Joshua did as he was commanded. He was obedient to the commander. You are to do the same.
All that matters is to follow Jesus. He can do in your life what you deem to be impossible.
With God all things are possible.
“I (Jesus) have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.”
Do you want your life to glorify God?
Could there be any other goal for us?
Your Commander in Chief is out in front. Let’s get back to supporting missions to bring the gospel to the last people to be reached for Jesus Christ. It is to be the desire of our hearts to reach others for the Great Commission.
