Today’s message summary of August 11, 2019 from Pastor Gus Brown:
The Holy Spirit gives the stamp of authenticity that makes each believer genuine.
How do you know if you have the real thing or not?
We look for a stamp or a seal that declares something to be real.
We can get things that are counterfeit, fake or artificial.
When it comes to believers in Jesus Christ, the stamp or seal of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life makes them genuine.
Sadly, we have a number of made-up Christians, pretenders, and those not showing the real thing in church life.
God knows those who are genuine. It starts with His seal.
2 Timothy 2:19
But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
This spiritual realm that we cannot see–including every angel and every demon–recognizes the seal given through the Holy Spirit.
The KJV of 2 Timothy 2:19 states that “God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his.”
How do angels and all other know that believers belong to the Lord?
By the seal that a Christian has stamped on their life.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
If you say that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, then you also need to obey Him.
The Holy Spirit within us creates a positive change. It teaches us how to have more faith and to rely more upon Him. What others will see in you is this wisdom and knowledge, and for them to see how you live for Jesus as an example for them.
The Holy Spirit also guarantees you as a recipient of your inheritance. The Spirit is the down payment for you as we live in the presence of sin and the world. There will be a day where He will bring you home with Him for all eternity.
The richness of everything that God does in your life is immeasurable. The Spirit indeed can take care of you. You simply must put your life in His hands and trust Him.
You and I do not see the Spirit, but all of the angels see Him in our lives–this is the spiritual world.
1 John 4:4
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
You were drawn in to Jesus Christ when you heard the word of truth.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
What does the person hear? It is the gospel of salvation. Faith comes from hearing the message.
Having believed (once one believes) you were marked (or sealed) with the Holy Spirit.
Why? Because the Spirit is the deposit, or earnest money–the down payment on what is yet to come. The Spirit guarantees that there is an inheritance.
Believers in the world are in lay-a-way status. They are purchased but not yet picked up by the One who owns us. Redemption is yet to come.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Believers will still stumble and sin, but the change continues within as the Holy Spirit maintains His presence.
2 Corinthians 13:5-7
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong–not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
Do you realize, as a believer in Jesus Christ, that He is in you through the power of the Holy Spirit.
When you look at your life and what others see in your life should be reflective of the fact that you are passing the test.
The truth will always stand on its own.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Your test through the Spirit: Romans 8:9-17
1. He controls you and your life. Even your thought life is brought into captivity to honor all of those things pertaining to Jesus Christ.
2. If you don’t have the Spirit of Christ, you don’t belong to Christ (you are not saved).
3. If Christ is in you, your flesh is dead (or it’s dying)–you are dying to self and living for Christ.
4. As the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead, He will give you a new life (v. 11).
5. If you live according to your own reasoning, you will die.
6. If by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds, you will live.
7. If we are His children, we are heirs of the Kingdom.
8. If we share in His sufferings, we share in His glory.
9. The Spirit testifies with our spirit that we belong to God (v. 15-16).
God has put a spirit within every person that the Holy Spirit can touch you and speak to you.
No one has to tell you that this is happening, because you, as a believer, can readily recognize when this is taking place.
You are sealed by the Holy Spirit to the day of redemption.
