Today’s message summary of June 9, 2019 from Pastor Gus Brown:
Truth is truth, and will always be true.
The Holy Spirit reveals truth to us. It is up to us as to how we live in accordance to it.
When people observe you as doing something that differs to the norm, you may be viewed as odd or strange. It is because of the difference in how you are living in Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit is the Teacher of this truth…past, present and future.
The truth of the Spirit teaches in the way to reveal salvation for those to believe in Jesus Christ. This truth is rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit confirms this truth.
2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Truth does not come from man. Note that the world has its own teachings that are contrary to this truth. Not all teaching found in the world is good. A lot of it involves following anything and everything but God’s truth. Evil creates deception.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Jeremiah 14:14
And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.
The Holy Spirit reveals the things of Jesus through instruction. He is everywhere. The Spirit gives discernment to give you what you need to see visions of truth or those that are deceptive.
Trust in no man. The stakes are too high. Your eternal destiny is at stake.
You need to know the Lord Jesus Christ for yourself. The Holy Spirit is the One who confirms Him and reveals Him to you.
Jesus prepared His followers for the emergence of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:6-7
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
The disciples were taught well, but there was coming a time where they would need to put everything into practice once Jesus left them. They were dependent upon Jesus to resolve all of their issues.
Jesus had to leave because He was limited in His body. The Holy Spirit is not limited by a body or in any earthly way. He is limitless and infinite.
The condition for the coming of the Holy Spirit is that Jesus would not longer be with them (v. 7). The Spirit will not come unless He left.
Jesus’ work was being completed.
Phase 1: God was working with mankind through the prophets
Phase 2: Jesus’ coming (Genesis 3:15)
Phase 3: Old Testament teaching of the Holy Spirit and teaching of the truth to the church
Phase 4: Jesus’ return
Think of Jesus’ time with his ministry – about 33 years. How long is the ministry of the Holy Spirit?
Acts 2:38-39
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
2
Thessalonians 1:6-9
… since
indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and
to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus
is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting
vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel
of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away
from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.
The Holy Spirit is still active because people are still being saved. They are being saved in a different way from that of the time of the church. Why? Because Jesus’ ministry is back in a different way.
Jesus said that He would send the Holy Spirit (v. 7). This is not a new plan. This was in place from the very beginning.
There was an agreement of the sending and the going by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
John 16:7
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for it I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
John 15:26
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.”
John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
The Holy Spirit will teach because He is the Spirit of truth. He is here to do what is needed to show this truth.
John 16:8-11
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Man chooses not to believe. Why?
- They are blinded by the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4)
- Because of all the evil that deceives – money (2 Thess. 2:10)
- They are taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1)
- Believing in the spirits that are not of God (1 John 4:1)
2 Corinthians 4:4
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Thessalonians 2:10
… and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
1 Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.
1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
The Holy Spirit reveals true righteousness in the life of the believer. He sets forth the standards of God. He demonstrates God’s righteousness through those who are saved.
Romans 3:10-12, 22-24
…as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
…the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Righteousness has to be imputed. Someone else’s righteousness has been given to you. It is the righteousness of Jesus.
Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 3:8-9
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The Holy Spirit grows us through this righteousness. He will teach us, and there will be accountability for our unbelief (John 16:11).
Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
John 3:18
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
You have been brought from darkness to light once you believe in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is the teacher and confirmation of our faith in Jesus Christ.
Learn to yield to the Holy Spirit and not to grieve Him.
Learn to hear His voice.
