The Ongoing Work of the Holy Spirit

Today’s message summary of October 20, 2019 from Pastor Gus Brown:

The work of the Holy Spirit is a constant, ongoing work.  It continues for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  I know, personally, that I have a long way to go.  Know this for certain:  You will never be what God wants you to be until you allow the Spirit, the very standards of God’s righteousness, to recognize your godly purpose.  This requires coming under the authority of the Holy Spirit.

Without the Holy Spirit, we make our Christianity into something which matches the gutter-snipe mentality of an unbelieving culture that has picked its manners and its morals out of the sewer gutters than that from the Spirit as taught from the Scriptures.

As a culture of believers, we are to be ambassadors of Jesus Christ.  We are to be the influencers of the world, and not the other way around.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Philippians 1:6

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

The work of the Holy Spirit in your life is an ongoing work.  It will never cease as long as you are living on this side of heaven.  God created each one of you to do His works, but He also teaches us within this experience.  He tells us to “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).  We are to learn from the Spirit how to operate in righteousness and holiness.

We are challenged to yield to the Spirit, and not grieve the Spirit.

Everything that Jesus Christ accomplished was through the power of the Holy Spirit.  He teaches the importance of this and showed it by yielding to the Spirit Himself.

It takes power to live the Christian life.  This power does not come from the flesh, but from the power of the Holy Spirit.

You are to be prayerful as you allow God to use us through the power of the Spirit.  The Holy Spirit will commit you to higher goals as He works with your speech, working with others, helping your neighbors, or even in your own lifestyle.

Real knowledge does not come from the educators.  The educators had to learn from someone.  It comes from the Spirit imparting this wisdom and knowledge.

God will teach you something that you can teach to others.

2 Corinthians 11:23-30

Are they servants of Christ?  I am a better one–I am talking like a madman–with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death.  Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one.  Three times I was beaten with rods.  Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak, and am I not weak?  Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?  If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

Matthew 22:37-40

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

The Holy Spirit is given to us to remind you of our purpose in life, to serve and love God and your neighbor.

The Holy Spirit will teach you the important knowledge of Jesus Christ as savior. This understanding will change your mentality and your actions. Only the Spirit, in opening up the Scriptures to you, will reveal this important truth.

2 Peter 1:20-21

…knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from Gid as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

He will lead you through the knowledge of God’s Word.

He will teach you how to lead another person to Jesus Christ.

He will teach you to fear God (have respect and reverence).

He will teach you how to be holy.  You are to function in His holiness.  Love, kindness and respect for others comes from functioning in His righteousness and holiness.

He will teach you how to be a steward in your life before others. (You own nothing in your possession.)

He will teach you about dedication to excellence.

Mark 7:37

And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

He will teach you how to worship God from your inner person.

Four ways we respond to the world:

  1. Feelings: Our experience and our expressed emotions.
  2. Thinking: Being able to plan and see the cause and effect in circumstances.
  3. Choices: Making good decisions and establishing standards, and having the courage and willingness to do what is right.
  4. Doing: Performing whatever action is desirable or ability to carry out God’s will.

These things will help you in dealing with the world.

Acts 5:29

But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”
